The Twisting Nether is an astral dimension that lies in parallel with the Great Dark Beyond. The forces of Light and Void bleed together at the boundaries of the Twisting Nether, engulfing this realm in perpetual strife. At times, the volatile magics that pervade the Twisting Nether intrude upon the physical universe, warping reality beyond measure.

The Twisting Nether is not a realm that represents the physical universe. It is not an infinite living realm composed of innumerable stars, worlds, and mortal civilizations. However, Blizzard's employees don't act as if it isn't a nonphysical realm with nonphysical beings. As such, it represents the physical universe whether Chris Metzen likes it or not.

Before the Twisting Nether existed, there was Light, a mysterious and benevolent force in the universe, and Void, a dark and vampiric force to devour all energy, to twist creation inward to feed upon itself. The Void quickly grew and spread its influence, moving against the Light. The mountain tension between these two opposing yet inseparable energies eventually ignited a series of catastrophic explosions, rupturing the fabric of creation and birthing a new realm into existence. In that moment, the physical universe was born. The energies released by the clash of Light and Void raged across the cosmos, raw matter matter merging and spinning into primordial matter merging and spinning into primordial worlds without number. For long epochs, this ever-expanding universe-the Great Dark Beyond-broiled in a maelstrom of fire and magic.[1] The most unstable energies coalesced into an astral dimension known as the Twisting Nether.[1]

Denizens of the Nether Realms

Demons are evil immortals who feed upon life and magic.[2] They had been formed as a result of the Light and Void energies that had bled together at the borders of the Twisting Nether. The demons embraced their furious passions and reveled in pushing the boundaries of their power, heedless of the consequences.[3]

Treading the chaotic spaces between worlds, the ethereals are astral travelers who dwell within the Twisting Nether. They are known to be collectors and traders of arcane items and artifacts. Now drawn to Outland, many ethereals are seeking to track down its treasures and steal them back into the Twisting Nether. They are liars and scoundrels who will stop at nothing to pursue their mysterious aims. The ethereals have no care at all for the Burning Crusade. They would even play both sides of the conflict against each other if doing so would serve to further their own goals.[4]

Netherdrakes are dragons notorious for their tenuous grasp on death.[5]

Shadowfiends are fiends that can slither out of the Twisting Nether and into reality[6]

Places In-Between the Nether and the Physical Universe

Argus is a world that hovered on the brink between the Twisting Nether and the physical universe, saturated with the fel energies of the Burning Legion.[7]

The Professions of the Cosmos

Demon Hunters

Demons hunters are hunters who can look every bit as demonic as their foes - lithe tattooed arms marked by scars and mutations, some surrounded by integuments of shadow, and some wielding fel magic as easily as any spawn of the Twisting Nether.[8]

Warlocks were former mages (or shamans) that delved too deeply into the roots of demonic power (or warlock magics). Consumed by a lust for dark knowledge, they've tapped into chaotic magics from beyond the world, magics that connected the myriad worlds together. The Burning Legion, a destructive army from beyond the stars, now feeds them their powers, allowing them to call upon the powerful emissaries of their demon masters and channel destructive energies.[9]
